With the US reporting fewer cases of COVID-19, its deadly variant B.1.1.7 has the potential to increase the pandemic tragedy. The rising overall cases of the mutant variant in Harris County is considered to be a ¨dual threat¨, according to Judge Lina Hidalgo.
In December, the United Kingdom reported a variant of concern of lineage, B117 as the more dominant variation. It was detected in September of 2020, and by January 13, 2021, approximately 76 cases of B117 have been reported in 12 U.S. states. B117 is easily transmittable, and with the modeled trajectory of this variant showing rapid exhibits in the U.S., the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has predicted that B117 will become the more predominant strain by March of 2021.
Rigorous implementation of public health strategies such as increasing the number of locations for people to get vaccinated will help to lower the number of potential cases against B117.
In February, Houston´s chief medical officer, Dr. David Persse, announced three cases of COVID-19 variants in the Houston area, a month after the UK variant was found. This new variant spreads 70% faster and is extremely contagious.
According to the CDC, all the Covid-19 vaccines currently available in the US are shown to be highly effective at preventing Covid-19. Receiving the vaccine “may also help keep you from getting seriously ill even if you do get Covid-19.”
When one becomes ill, it can put family members and loved ones at risk. Life can become critical for the at risk individuals with weak immune systems. When one becomes ill, it can put family members and loved ones at risk. Healthcare workers who had received the dose of a prominent COVID-19 vaccine were four times less frequent to receive asymptomatic coronavirus infections than their unvaccinated counterparts.
“Wearing masks and social distancing help reduce your chance of being exposed to the virus or spreading it to others, but these measures are not enough. Vaccines will work with your immune system so it will be ready to fight the virus if you are exposed,” shares the CDC on their website.
People may be reluctant and have second thoughts to take the vaccine, but one thing to keep in mind is how not receiving the vaccine could affect the people and loved ones around you. We’re amidst a time where safety precautions are crucial, and the measures could judge the outcome.
